Alcohol and Drug Addiction
Jennifer dedicated the first part of her career to recovery. It just seems that addiction affects every family and having tools to address it can be helpful for many counseling relationships. In addition to being a clinical social worker, Jennifer is a clinical addiction counselor.
Jennifer is a mother of three children who have taught her more about counseling and family transitions than any coursework one could ever study. Jennifer has more than 18 years of experience assisting families reach their goals with parenting, teenage issues and childhood challenges. Jennifer has been doing in home counseling for families for more than a decade and sometimes it can break down a barrier for a teenager who doesn’t want to be seen in a counseling clinic!
Jennifer has worked in a local hospital where she was the first line of contact for the Mother/Baby unit for more than eight years. She served as families’ first line of emotional support after a loss or challenge in their health as well as having served families in the process of adoption or adoption support. Jennifer knows that it is important during family building challenges that the helper has a real idea of the empathy needed and it is comforting to know your helper knows the impact of a loss.
Fertility care is more than just procedures, hormones and prescription medication. Your emotional health is very important in this process. Infertility has been compared to medical challenges such as cancer because of the way it can create stress in a person’s life. Counseling can help you and your partner with the emotional roller coaster and stress that you’re facing and ensure your relationship is balanced and healthy.
Miscarriage is a life changing event that many parents experience. It can feel very isolating and you need to get support and take care of yourself. Counseling can also help with anxiety experienced after a miscarriage or a new pregnancy following a miscarriage. It can also help in cases of a high-risk pregnancy or bed rest.
Families arrive at adoption by many different paths and an individual or couple can bring to it many different emotions. Counseling can help you evaluate the many options for adopting a child and the various steps – physical, spiritual, emotional and mental – needed to arrive at the family’s desired plan. Counseling can support you during an adoption as well as after the adoption is finalized.
Grief and Loss
Loss is something everyone hopes to avoid and can be difficult to talk about sometimes with your usual sources of support. Many do not know what to say or try to avoid the subject as it is just too difficult. Counseling is a safe place to process loss whether it be from death, infertility, a miscarriage, or the death of an infant or child.
Jennifer is trained in EMDR and the Grief Recovery Method.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences.
